Prof. SR Janakiraman
(popularly known as SRJ) passed away on September 4, 2026. He was 98.
He was a musician’s musician, a teacher, academician and emient musicologist. He taught music and musicology for over five decades in several prestigious institutions. He brought out several papers and publications on music and musicology.
The Music Academy Madras honoured him with the title of Sangita Kala Acharya in 1997. He was also the recipient of several honours like Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu Government, Fellow of the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Padma Shri.
Among his many publications, some brought out by the Music Academy are : Raga Lakshanas, Ragas of Saramrta, and Lakshana Gitas.
The Music Academy conveys its heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and disciples.
