Lifetime Achievement Award for TH Vinayakram.

Hailed as the artiste who put the ghatam on the international stage, TH Vinyakram is one of the best-known faces of percussion from South India. Coming from a family that is devoted to the art, his father TR Harihara Sharma being a highly venerated teacher, Vinayakram or Vikku as he is known to his countless fans, began performing at the age of 13 and went on to accompany most of the top ranking singers of the last generation. He moved on to the international stage when he joined the Shakti Group to collaborate with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain. Widely recognised, and the recipient of several richly deserved awards, Vinayakram has been a great guru, passing on his art in an organised fashion to several disciples. The Music Academy, Madras, which earlier conferred on him the Sangita Kala Acharya, takes pride in conferring its Special Lifetime Achievement Award on him.

This award does not fall under the institution’s annual recognitions and honours. It is conferred once in a while to artistes of outstanding calibre who the Music Academy feels deserve an independent recognition. The earlier recipients have been the dancer Kamala Lakshminarayanan and the violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman. The award function will be held on October 10, 2018.
