The Music Academy – Tag Raga Identification Competition has been jointly organised by Music Academy and the Tag Corporation & Ramu Endowments especially for Carnatic Music Rasikas.
Over a hundred participants ranging from ten years to ninety years assembled to participate in the competition. Audio clippings carefully selected from the Music Academy Tag Digital archives were played and the participants were asked to write down the raga name. Yester year musicians like M.D. Ramanathan, S. Kalyanaraman, and current day musicians were included.
This was followed by a lecture demonstration by Dr. Sriram Parasuram on Identifying Ragas- methods and strategies. He spoke about some ways in which raga memory can be built up. In rakti ragas like Saveri, Todi there are identifiable phrases, in scalar ragas, the scale will be obvious but there are some ragas which are similar like Kedaragaula, Suruti which he referred to as belonging to one basket. The brief presentation was very informative and was illustrated with appropriate raga phrases.
Mr. N. Murali President of the Music Academy gave away the cash prizes of ten thousand each to the top three winners. This was sponsored by Mr. R.T. Chari , Chairman Tag Group of Companies and Vice President Music Academy. Mr. Murali mentioned that it was a passion for Mr. Chari to spread music awareness among rasikas. He has compiled a lot of raga information, songs, snippets in cds and there are many rasikas who have heard these and benefitted from this endeavor. He also said that Sriram’s presentation was a value addition to the programme.
The winners this year were P. Ratan Abhijeet K. Akhil Kumar and Anand V. Raman. The event was coordinated and anchored by Dr. Sumathi Krishnan.
This is the second consecutive year that this competition has been organised and there was an overwhelming response. Over the years this may gain momentum and become an Octoberfest.
