Raga Identification Competition

The Music Academy - TAG Raga Identification Competition

15th October, 2017
Venue: Music Academy Main Hall
9:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m.

Jointly organised by Music Academy, Tag Corporation and Ramu Endowments specially for Carnatic Music Rasikas.

A raga could be described as a tonal framework or a melodic mould. Though the term occurs earlier, historically the raga as a phenomenon had started being explored by musicians from the thirteenth century. Following the 72 Mela scheme of the 17th century, Carnatic music saw a host of new ragas unfolding. Today every concert is a unique experience for the rasika. While there will be many familiar melodies in a concert, unheard melodies are sweeter!!

This is an effort to challenge the rasikas. Can ragas be identified by a person through sheer listening and an intuitive understanding rather than spelling out the grammar of the notes? It is up to the interested rasikas to find out in a fun-filled way. This competition is for the lay person and not Performing musicians or advanced students of music.
