Tyagaraja Aradhana 2017
Each year, Tyagaraja Aradhana is conducted at the Music Academy with prominent musicians leading the goshti Ganam of the Pancaratna kritis. In the evening there is usually a concert by an established musician rendering Tyagaraja Kritis.
The entire aradhana is organised under an endowment instituted by late Sri P. Obul Reddy and Late Smt. Gnanamba.
The programme held on 22nd January this year, began with a Puja, followed by a nagaswaram recital.
The aradhana started with Chetulara being rendered by flautists led by Mala Chandrasekhar. After singing the compositions Sriganapati and Guruleka, the Pancaratna kritis were rendered in unison by a group of young artists. The bonhomie among them was visible when they passed on the mike to those seated on either side. There were few mikes on stage but the chorus was heard loud and clear. The stage appeared completely full with the vocalists flanked on either side by senior percussionists and violinists. The enthusiastic participation of leading young vocalists was the highlight of the aradhana this year. It was just about devotion to Tyagaraja and an appreciation of his colossal contribution to Carnatic music. There were many in the audience who had booklets with them and were singing along. The hall was packed.
This was followed by a traditional lunch for the participants.
A unique event was presented in the evening. A musical drama on Sri Tyagaraja was staged instead of the usual evening concert.
The life of Sri Tyagaraja was presented by popular theatre personality, T.V. Varadharajen and his troupe, with script of the play being written by well-known journalist VSV. Renowned vocalist Bombay Jayashree has carefully selected the Tyagaraja kritis to be rendered in this musical drama. Apart from her, well known musicians O. S. Tyagarajan, Shertalai Ranganatha Sharma, O.S. Arun, Kunnakkudi Balamuralikrishna and others have enriched the play by their soulful rendition.
It was a fitting musical tribute to Sri Tyagaraja as we celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of the bard this year.
